What an upgrade involves depends on the age of the board, how many circuits the property runs, and whether anything is being added on the load side. We assess the existing setup first, then quote the work that is actually required rather than a standard replacement.

What Happens During A Switchboard Upgrade

  1. Assessment — we look at the existing board, the circuits it feeds, the condition of the wiring behind it, and the meter arrangement.
  2. Written quote — scope, components, and any conditions we found, such as an asbestos-backed panel or aged wiring that needs attention first.
  3. Booking and power interruption — most residential upgrades are done in a day, with the power off for part of it. We tell you the likely window before the day so you can plan around fridges, freezers and anyone working from home.
  4. Installation — the old board is removed, the new enclosure fitted, circuits transferred, labelled and protected.
  5. Testing and certification — circuits tested, RCDs verified, and a certificate of compliance issued for the work.

Licensed Work, Tested And Certified

Switchboard work is not a job for a handyman or a general builder. It sits at the point where the network supply meets every circuit in the property, and it has to be carried out by a licensed electrician and tested before it is put back into service.

Two things matter for an Adelaide property owner. First, current wiring rules require RCD protection on circuits that are altered or added — so an upgrade is usually the point where the whole property gains protection it never had. Second, once the work is finished you should receive a certificate of compliance. Keep it. It is what an insurer, a conveyancer or a future buyer will ask for.

Where an upgrade involves the meter or the supply side of the board, the work has to be coordinated with SA Power Networks and any changes to metering arranged through the correct provider. We flag that in the quote, so there are no surprise delays part-way through the job.

Is It Worth Upgrading The Switchboard Now?

If the board is doing its job, protected by working RCDs, and has spare capacity, there is no reason to touch it. The upgrade becomes worth doing when one of these is true:

  • The board still runs ceramic or rewireable fuses, so there is no RCD protection on the circuits.
  • The board is full, and the next thing you want to install has nowhere to go.
  • Circuits trip regularly and resetting has become part of the household routine.
  • You are about to add solar, a battery, an EV charger, or ducted air conditioning.
  • The property is being rented out or sold, and you want the electrical side documented and safe.

Doing it before a solar, battery or EV installation is usually the cheaper sequence. What Affects The Cost Of A Switchboard Upgrade?

The main drivers are the number of circuits, whether the enclosure needs to be relocated or enlarged, the condition of the wiring behind the board, whether the existing panel is asbestos-backed, whether the property is single or three phase, and whether any metering or supply-side work is involved. Signs Your Switchboard Needs Attention

Some of these are urgent. Others just tell you the board is near the end of its working life.

  • A burning or hot plastic smell anywhere near the board — turn the power off at the main switch and call an electrician straight away.
  • Scorch marks, discolouration, or heat damage around fuses or breakers.
  • Buzzing, crackling, or a breaker that feels warm to touch.
  • Breakers that trip when a particular appliance starts, or that trip for no obvious reason.
  • Rewireable fuses, ceramic fuse holders, or a board with no test buttons on it at all.
  • Circuits added over the years with no labelling, so nobody knows what turns off what.
  • A board that has been extended sideways with sub-boards and extra enclosures.
